Introduce of sky lantern:

Sky lanterns, also known as Kongming Lantern or Chinese lanterns are airborne paper lanterns that are best known as a tradition found in some Asian cultures. They are traditionally constructed from oiled rice paper on a bamboo frame, and contain a small candle or fuel cell composed of a waxy flammable material. When lit, the flame heats the air inside the lantern, thus lowering its density causing the lantern to rise into the air. The sky lantern is only airborne for as long as the flame stays alight, after which the lantern sinks back to the ground.

Sky lanterns are also referred to as sky candles or fire balloons, however the latter term is also used to refer to balloon munitions used during World War II.

Lanterns have proved extremely unpopular with farmers in many countries due to the potential for causing crop fires and the chance of death of livestock on consuming the lantern remains upon landing.

History of sky lantern:

The Kongming Lantern was the first hot air balloon, said to be invented by the Chinese sage and military strategist Zhuge Liang,whose reverent term of address (i.e. Chinese style name) was Kongming. They were first deployed at the turn of the 3rd century as a type of signaling balloon or, as it's said, as a type of spy blimp in warfare. Alternatively the name may come from the lantern's resemblance to the hat Kongming is traditionally shown to be wearing.

According to the sinologist and historian of science Joseph Needham, the Chinese experimented with mini-hot air balloons from as early as the 3rd century BC, during the Warring States period, which suggests that the Sky Lantern may have been invented long before Kongming's era.

Sky Lanterns are safe to use, however, as it involves a naked flame there are safety procedures that should be followed. Please ensure you read the instructions provided and are familiar with them before launching your Sky Lantern. 

Considerations when launching Sky Lanterns

· Always keep water or fire extinguishers nearby

· Children must not be left unattended with the Wish Lanterns.

· Ensure that the wind is not stronger than 5 mph.

· Do not use around dry crops or if a burn ban is in effect in your county

· Ensure that trees or buildings are not in the flight path.

Do not release within five miles of an airport.

Sky Lantern are safe when used correctly but are not toys and should not be handled by children.

How to launch a Sky Lantern

1 Check wind direction.

2 Ensure there are no obstacles in the way of the intended balloon flight.

3 Ensure Sky Lantern is fully open and corners are not creased.

4 Light the corners of the fuel.

5 Hold the Sky Lantern upright and after a few seconds the Sky Lantern will feel lighter and will gradually rise.

6 Do not attempt to throw it up into the air, just guide it and let it go by itself.

7 Stand back and watch it float up into the sky.
